Mary-Jo Gilligan is an artist currently based in Co. Kildare. Gilligan’s work is often site-specific and her practice is something of a portable laboratory. Her practice draws on a range of interests, (energy, alchemy, residues, weight, sound, smell, sensory awareness, built environments…), that converge within her artworks. The artist works in a variety of media from installation, video, sound, scent and drawing to live performance and intervention.
Following studies at the University of Ljubljana and the NCAD Dublin Gilligan graduated in 2007 with a BA hons degree in Fine Art. The artist has since undertaken residencies with FÍS, The Performance Corporation and Greenstar. She has had work commissioned by Out Of Site for Out of Site Out Of Centre, by Portlaoise CoCo for Urban Interventions, and by Culturstruction as part of Dublin City Council’s Open Spaces programme. Recent exhibitions include And The Dead Tree Gives No Shelter, East Wall, Dublin; Never Ending Telescope The Back Loft Gallery; Dynamo Tells Thomastown Mill, Co Kilkenny; ‘Tastes Like Lego’ for Culturstruction, Dublin City Hall and FÍS Multimedia, Passionfruit Theatre Athlone.
Gilligan is the co-producer of Transitopia ‘08, a site-specific public art project created for Naas, Co Kildare and founder of the architectural research body Dublin City Agency for the Sensory Investigation of Constructed Space.
Gilligan also has an active collaboratice practice. She is a member of the art collective Soft Blonde Moustache with whom she regularly performs and exhibits. Soft Blonde Moustache work through drawing, sound, singing, sculpture, shadow, cut-outs, video and live performance. Recent exhibitions include solo shows Ptici niso letala Studio 8 Ljubljiana, Hold Your Breath While you Draw Monstertruck Gallery Dublin and the group show It Goes On, Templebar Gallery Dublin.
